El Niňo is the abnormal rising of temperature above the pacific ocean which affects the surrounding countries and islands. It brings forth pestilence, famine and eventually death to plants, animals and humans. It’s intriguing how this demon plague got its name “El Niňo” since this phrase means “the boy” pertaining to Jesus.

This devastating phenomenon is the main problem of the town. As expected, this came after the country celebrated the birth of Christ. Though it was just too early and hot to handle. Provinces and towns all over the islands have already proclaimed that they are already under the state of calamity.

After bringing fissures over the farmlands of Isabela, it’s again beginning to threat yet another province, the Quirino. Crops worth of millions were already destroyed. Also, fish kill and poultry kill are fastly spreading. Almost all of the dams which are the main sources of electricity are on a critical level and if not, almost dried up. Thus, bringing rotational brown-outs which greatly affect industries, businesses and schools.

A calamity is always a catastrophe. No one can stop them. But atleast prepareness can limit its negative effects.

Bantay is a 4th class municipality in the province of Ilocos Sur, Philippines. According to the latest census, it has a population of 33,174 people in 6,107 households.

Origin of the Municipality’s Name

The municipality’s name came from the fact that its patron, Our Lady of Charity, protects the town. The miraculous image was found onboard a ship standed somewhere along the Ilocos Coast during the Spanish Era. They enshrined and venerated the image in a chapel made from cogon grass and bamboo. Many other people from other towns came to claim the miraculous statue, but failed to even move it. Only people from the town can move the statue. As a result those who attempted to claim the miraculous statue went home, believing that the Miraculous Image of Our Lady of Charity would remain forever to guard the place.

Another origin is that the municipality is bordered by the Carballo mountains, which forms a natural boundary between the town and neighboring Abra. “Bantay” is an Ilocano term meaning “mountain,” and “guard.”

History

The parish of Bantay was founded by the Spaniards in accordance with the Augustinian definitory of April 30, 1591. Other sources say that it was established by Father Juan Bautista de Montoya, its first parish priest, with Geronimo Cavero as his assistant. Another source tells that the Ministry of Bantay was founded in 1590.

At the time of the foundation of the municipality, Bantay had the following rancherias: Turod, Buked (Buquig), Karamayan, and Bantaoay (now the Municipality of San Ildefonso). It had the following visitas: Magsingal, Lapog, Santa, and at one time Santa Catalina San Vicente and Santo Domingo. The permanent territorial jurisdiction of Bantay was made permanent in 1721, through an agreement between the Augustinian Provincial and the Vicar General of the Diocese of Nueva Segovia. This agreement also put Santa Catalina, San Vicente, Caoayan and Santo Domingo under the jurisdiction of Vigan.

The barrios of Ora East and Ora Centro were burned to the ground in the ’70s, in one of the most notorious acts done by dreaded armed groups known as the saka-saka (Ilocano term which literally means “barefooted”).

I am a young boy, who is fond of arts, drawing everything that catches my interest. A boy who is always conscious with his way of dressing, fashionable and love music very much.

I am the one and only pride of Dur-as Bantay, Alvan Joseph Castaneda, fourteen years in existence and presently residing at Zone IV, Bantay, Metro-Vigan. Always believe in an adage, “If others can, why can’t I?”, serves to be my guiding principle in life.

I am friendly in nature and I love going to my friends and cousin’s house. Sometimes get late of going home, which made me sometimes not be able to help on the household chores.

On my field of education, I was inspired by my tito’s and tita’s, my family who are in one way to support and guide me. Our standard of living pushes me through struggling hardship. And as of now, I am pursuing my best not only academically but also practically which makes me a full human and molds me for being one!
